CBHS Interact Society With Younger Children - Feb '11

On Saturday, 26 February 2011, a number of pupils from the Camps Bay High School Interact Society spent their morning entertaining children from Nazareth House and James House. The pupils set up a slippery slide, entertained the children with various water games, Easter Egg hunts, face painting, music etc.

The children enjoyed a lovely morning of fun at the school. They were all treated to a hotdog for lunch and all left with a party pack and happy hearts.

CBHS Academic Achiever Nabeel Sima's Speech - Feb '11

Good morning Mr De Korte, teachers, honoured guests, matriculants of 2010, prefects and Camps Bay High School. For the new Grade 8's who don’t know who I am, I was a past prefect and a matriculant of 2010.

It would normally be the honour of the Top matric pupil to make a speech to the school. This year, however, our top candidate, Nicola Soekoe, who is also our former head prefect, is currently in Brazil on a gap year. So this year, it is an honour for me to stand here and make a speech on her behalf.

I want to start off by saying you are all extremely privileged to be attending such a remarkable school as Camps Bay High. There are so many schools out there that don’t have the same facilities that you have access to. A newly renovated swimming pool, a field, tennis courts, a computer lab, a library, a gym, and more importantly, a team of dedicated teachers who want nothing more than to watch you succeed.

It honestly seems like just yesterday I was sitting on the same cold floor, right there where the new Grades 8's are sitting now. Little did I know that five years later I would be standing here as a past pupil, giving a speech to my old school.

There are a number of things that can contribute to a successful high school career. For me, these are my own personal keys to success, and I hope it can help you too.

The first key to success is Balance. It’s vitally important to find a balance in everything you do. Your sports, academics, culture, social life, these things all work hand-in-hand and it’s your job to make sure that you don’t concentrate on one thing more than the other. If you’re a sporty person, make sure you don’t forget about your academics. If you’re an academic person, try to do some exercise, a healthy body really does equal a healthy mind.

The second key to success is Goals. Set realistic goals for yourself. Perhaps it’s getting into the Top 10, learning a new sport, making a new friend, passing maths or even getting a distinction in matric. It’s good to compete with other people, but it’s more important to compete with yourself. Always try to beat your previous records. If you know you can achieve 60% for a test, don’t aim for 60, aim for 70%. If you don’t set any goals, you have nothing to work towards, and if you have nothing to work towards, you have no reason to work.

The third key to success is Prioritise. Do the most important things first. If you want to go out in the evening, make sure you are able to get your homework done or get an hour of studying. Don’t leave things till the last minute. Trust me when I say this, cramming does not work, especially before a test.

The last key to success is Motivation. Keep yourself motivated. If you study for an hour, go take a break for an hour. Your brain isn’t a machine; it needs to rest as well. Reward yourself for working hard. Spoil yourself when you accomplish your goals. It doesn’t help to work without motivation.

To the Matric class of 2011, this is it. For the past 11 years, this is what you’ve been working towards. Your final year has arrived, and there’s no going back. So make this final year one to remember. Sooner than you know it, it’s already going to be your June exams, your matric dance, prelims, finals, and eventually your last exam in high school. It’s important to work extremely hard this year, from the first day, because what you put in now will ultimately affect your entire future. Don’t be afraid to ask questions in class. Your teachers are there to help you. Trust me, in the end its worth all the screaming, tantrums, early mornings, and pulling those all-nighters.

To the new Grade 8's of 2011: I can see some of you are looking a bit scared and nervous, not knowing what’s going to happen next. I want you to take a good look at the people sitting next to you, in front of you and even behind you. I want you to do yourself a favour, make it your goal that by the end of today you’re going to make at least one new friend, and tomorrow two, and the next day three. Because these are the people you are going to spend the next five years with. So get to know them well. And who knows, you may even end up being lifelong friends. Try to get involved in many aspects of school life, academics, sport and culture. Try a new sport; join a few societies, participate in Sport Day, in Gala and the inter-house plays. So much can happen in the next five years, you might as well enjoy it!

Whether you’re in grade 8 or even in matric, I hope you realise that this school presents you with a tremendous number of opportunities to do great things. When you’re in high school, all you hear is people saying they just can’t wait for school to be over. Now that I’m in University, all I hear is people saying they just can’t wait to graduate, so when will we ever be happy with where we are right now? So don’t just aim to finish matric, enjoy, and treasure the journey that comes with it, because the journey is more important than the destination. Set goals for yourself, and when you’re ready, try to reach those goals. Make mistakes, but more importantly learn from those mistakes. Open your mind to new things, to great new possibilities. Step out of your comfort zone. Go out there, give it your all. Work hard, play hard. Be the best, unique person that you can be. Never be afraid to ask for help, it doesn’t make you any less of a person. Dare to dream, make a wish, set a goal. Then step into the future with confidence and always be proud to be you. And remember, the only one stopping you from reaching your goals, is yourself.

CBHS Newsletter 2 - Feb '11

Dear Parents

Inter-house Athletics:
On Wednesday we held our Inter-House Athletics Day. Yellow House walked away with the Spirit Cup, while Red House won the day on points. It was a most enjoyable day. Over 80% of our pupils competed in a track, or field event. The heat did not prevent our pupils turning in some top performances.

Swimming Camp

The Swimming Camp was held at Camps Bay High School on the 28th and 29th January. Over 30 swimmers used this camp to launch their training for the swimming season. Traditionally the camp is held in Ceres, where we use their 50m pool for training. Sadly at the last minute we learned that this pool was closed and hence had to make an alternate plan. For a change the swimmers had some training on Saturday in the mountains above Gordons Bay. A big thanks to the teachers who ran the camp, namely Mr Cottle, Ms Mobsby, Ms Ricketts and Ms Parker. Thanks also to Mr de Korte for driving the bus, and Mrs Cronje for the wonderful catering.

Grade 8 Camp
Over the weekend of the 4th – 6th February, 125 new Grade 8’s, 22 prefects and 10 teachers travelled out to Onrus for the Grade 8 Camp. The weather was wonderful, and the campers were kept busy with team building exercises and talks. The aim of the camp is to get the Grade 8’s into the Camps Bay School system, and their different houses. All the activities are run in house groups. Over the weekend many new friends were made. On the bus trip home everyone seemed to fall asleep.

2010 School Magazine
Grade 9 – 11 parents should now be in possession of the 2010 school magazine. We issue the magazine in the following year as this allows us time to include the Matric results (issued on 6th January 2011). The magazine is a stunning record of the 2010 school year. Through the copy and the pictures many happy memories were captured. A big thanks to Mr Cunliffe and his editorial team, and to Mr Roussopoulos, our resident photographer for producing this magazine. The Grade 8’s who attended Camps Bay Primary school must go to the school to collect their 2010 magazine. Any Grade 12’s or their parents who want this school magazine must come and collect them at the school. This is definitely a document you will keep.

Interhouse Gala: Invitation to Parents

On Tuesday 15th February we will hold our Interhouse Gala. The gala will start at 12h15 in our pool and all parents are welcome to attend. We will have seating for you, however you will be in the sun so a hat and suncream are essential. We will start the gala off with a few words to open our new pool for the year.

SPORT

TENNIS (Girls)
The 1st team played against Reddam and drew 3 – 3 but beat Springfield 4 – 2. Well done!

BASKETBALL (Boys)
Both teams played exceptionally well on Wednesday.
The U19’s won their match with William Ridah being the player of the match.
The U16’s lost their match narrowly with Pascal Christian being the player of the match.

BASKETBALL (Girls)
The U19’s played against Bergvliet and disappointingly lost 28 – 8.
The U16’s made a good comeback and beat Bergvliet 10 – 8.

HOCKEY (Boys)
The U19’s played the first summer league match against Elkanah House and won 6 - 0

WATERPOLO vs Herzlia
The U19 Boys won 7 – 5
U15’s won 10 – 4. Luke Kitchen and Dylan Phillips were players of the match.
U14’s lost 6 – 4. Tristan Nudlblicher and Richard Seeber were the players of the match.

SWIMMING
At a Relay competition against 5 other schools, Camps Bay won – Well done!

CRICKET
Congratulations to Ntsika Shushu and Kyle Horn who have been invited to attend the Western Province District Cricket matches the weekend of 11th February 2011.

The U15’s played against Plumstead. Plumstead made 140 runs and Camps Bay were 40 runs for 7 wickets when bad light stopped play.

Saturday 5th February vs Westerford
Camps Bay batted first and scored 126 runs. Imran Mazema scored 30 runs and Dylan Meek 31. Westerford batted and passed Camps Bay’s score with 5 wickets down. Kyle Horn and Ntsiha Shushu bowled well to restrict Westerford early on in the innings. A good performance in general against a Premier League side.

GYMNASTICS
Dominic Seeber competed in Serbia from the 12th to 21st December 2010 against 26 pupils from 12 countries in the Junior Olympic level. Dominic was placed 15th and came in the Top 6 on the T Bar pummel. Well done Dominic!

KITING
Dylan Adriaens is taking part in the SAKT (South African Kite tour) which is a professional South African kiting competition for professional and novice Kite boarders around the Country. Dylan is competing in the professional division as he is a sponsored rider by Slingshot kites. Dylan is the youngest sponsored professional rider taking part in this tour. He is competing against all age groups and riders who do the International competing circuit, so the competition is really tough. Dylan’s position in the competition thus far is in the top 10 in South Africa.

He is competing in all three disciplines course racing, wave riding and free style events, with the following schedule:
13-14 November : Durban
20 – 21 November Langebaan
11-12 December : Port Elizabeth
18 – 19 December Cape Town (Big Bay)
End February 2011: to be confirmed

Being in his position, he needs to practice, like any other sport, to do his best. When there is wind, he practices in the afternoons at Kite beach in Table View or Big Bay. (± 2-3 hours per day). When there is no wind he goes to the Virgin Active Gym in Gardens to build up his upper body strength.

22nd World Scout Jamboree, Sweden, 2011 – 18th July – 10th August 2011

The World Organisation of the Scout Movement is the largest non-formal education youth movement in the world with more than 30 million members in 150 countries.
Every four years scouts from almost every country in the world gather to contribute to building a better world. These events, held each time in a different country, are called World Scout Jamborees and the next one will be held in Rinkaby, Sweden from 27th July to 7th August 2011.
World Jamborees are special events because they bring together tens of thousands of young people from many different cultures, socio-economic backgrounds and countries in solidarity and in promoting world peace. More than 30,000 Scouts are expected in Sweden this year! For the young people who participate in a Jamboree, it is an experience of a lifetime! These Scouts return home inspired and motivated, ready to become future leaders both in Scouting and within their local communities.

Through Jamborees, Scouting shows the world that the impossible is possible. We learn to build a world where people care about one another and the environment, a world of dialogue, friendship and co-operation; a world of peace.

Congratulations to Abdul Malik Akiemdien who has been selected to represent South Africa at this event.

Yours sincerely
