CBHS The Rainbow Team - Aug '15

The Rainbow Team (affiliated with Camps Bay Football Club and coached by Anees Abbas) recently returned from the Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden, where the team was chosen to represent South Africa in the opening ceremony in front of approx. 60 000 people. In all, over 40 000 players in 1,750+ teams from 70+ countries competed, making it the largest youth football competition in the world.

Amongst the sixteen boys in The Rainbow Team squad were a number of underprivileged boys from Khayelitsha, IY & Salt River whose costs were borne by a variety of Swedish and RSA sponsors. There were four boys from Camps Bay High School – Alex Da Silva, Siphesihle Songanga, Lucas Aggouras & Luka Augoustides.

In The Rainbow Team’s age group (Boys' 14 years) there were over 250 teams. In the first round (round robin). The Rainbow Team’s record of winning one, drawing one & loosing one match was good enough to qualify for the knock-out stage in second place in their group. In the second round they went out on penalties after a tight 0-0 draw. In addition the team won two further friendlies on the tour, one in Stockholm before the tournament and one in Gothenburg after the tournament. Our team was chosen to represent South Africa in the opening ceremony (some 58 000 spectators).

Well done to our Camps Bay High School participants!
