CBHS Newsletter 2 - Feb '13

Dear Parents

The First Term is well under way with a number of big school events already in the past. The Inter-house Athletics Day was a lot of  fun with great levels of participation from all. We had some sore legs and small injuries along with sunburn, but on the whole it was an injury-free day. See photos of this event ‹‹here››.

Yesterday we ran the Inter-house Swimming Gala. The whole school crowded around the pool which created an exciting vibe. The day ended with the traditional ‘Matric Big Splash’. To add to the spirit, a number of Matric Tutors also joined them and jumped into the pool with their classes. See photos of this event ‹‹here››.

This morning we said goodbye to our Waterpolo Girls' Team who left at 5 a.m. with Ms Thomson and Ms Pearson to travel to Port Elizabeth to compete in a tournament there. We wish them well.

Yesterday, (14 February) the American exchange students arrived from West Hartford in Connecticut. They will be here for nine days, and then our pupils will travel to the USA at the end of the term. See photos of the welcoming Assembly for our visiting students ‹‹here››.

School Magazine:

We were very proud of the 2012 School Magazine that we were able to hand out this week. It is a wonderful record of the year and will always bring back fond memories. A big thanks must go to the two teacher editors; Mr Cunliffe and Ms Pearson and their team. Also to Mr Roussopoulos for all the wonderful pictures that liven up this publication.

Matric Results:

As an addendum to the 2012 Matric results (see them ‹‹here››), the WCED gave us some very good news. They informed us that Stephen Hagglund had come 6th in the province in the Geography exam and Rebekka Vaisanen had come first in Spanish (an additional language she had done).

My School Card:

We are currently enjoying a small but regular income from all the parents who use the ‘My School’ card at Woolworths when you shop.

If you do not have a Camps Bay High School, ‘My School Card’, can I ask you to mail Sigrid McGregor at sigridmcg@mweb.co.za and she will send you details on how to sign up. Many thanks to all of you who have cards already.

Education Fund:

The teachers and some past pupils have been contributing to an ‘education fund’ at the school which we use to assist needy pupils with things like, bus tickets, uniforms, books, glasses, other medical bills, emergency food parcels, camp and outing fees and any other need that may arise. Our theory has always been that once enrolled at Camps Bay High, you should enjoy all that the school has to offer. However, some pupils may have a crisis at home which dramatically erodes their financial support base. This fund comes into play at this point. Usually we are alerted by teachers of a need, or more recently pupils have felt free to approach their teachers to apply for money from this fund. This money does not come from school fees.

If any parent wishes to make a once off donation or contribute regularly, please contact Ms Lynette Olivier (our Bursar) at school on 021-438-1507.

Valentine’s Ball (15th February):

All pupils are warmly invited to attend the magical Valentine’s Ball. Having a valentine or special someone is not a requirement to attend the ball. In fact it is at exactly these social occasions that you may meet the person of your dreams! The evening starts at 7 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m.

(At the time we received this newsletter for online publishing, the event had already taken place. You can see photos of this event ‹‹here››.)

Academic Programme:

The work that your child needs to master in each subject is well underway. At this stage they should have their notebooks and workbooks organised and will have completed some tests or assignments. All pupils have homework diaries and you can keep track of  their homework by looking at their diary. Please engage with their books and look at what has been done so far this year.

School Windows:

The contractors who will be replacing our windows with their rusty hinges start work tomorrow. This may cause even more congestion on campus as far as parking goes. So please be patient for the next month.

RCL Members 2013:

Congratulations to the following pupils who have been elected to the Representative Council of Learners to represent their respective Grades in 2013:

Grade 8:

Parenting 101:

The very successful series of parent education talks, “Mind the Gap”, continues on 19 February with a much needed talk on drug use.

The talk commences at 18h30 in the school hall and should last about 30 minutes. It is a must for all parents, whether you suspect your teen has access to drugs. Further talks in the series are:
12 March – Managing technology
26 March – Teenage sexuality

May I encourage you to attend this important talk?

Grade 6 and 7 Parents:

If you are thinking about schooling for 2014 and 2015, you are doing the right thing. We, Camps Bay High School, would like to invite you to a special information meeting on Thursday, 7 March 2013 in the Camps Bay High School Library. Mr David de Korte will be talking about the school and what our educational game plan is for your children in the future. Most importantly, you will be given the opportunity to ask any questions pertaining to the High School or education in general.

Mrs Vivienne Ashcroft will be contacting you in this regard during the month of February.

Jiu-Jitsu:

Mira Blume, a Grade 10 pupil took part in the Open International Championships in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, on the 8th December 2012 in Cape Town. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a mixed martial art that is very appreciated in the army and police forces. It has become popular as a form of self-defence. In her weight division and belt range she won 2 silver medals in total in the category: Gi (with Kimono) and No-Gi (Shorts and Rash vest). After several fights she was only submitted by a 23 year old colleague from their Dojo (aka.training “facility”) TGA (Renzo Gracie Academy). The next challenge will be to participate in the African Trials for the Abu Dhabi World championships in February 2013 in East London. We wish Mira all the best for her competitions in the future and hope to read more about her sports career.

Dance (Dianne Knight):

In October 2012 both Brittany Ferreira and Jessica Way finally achieved their Full Cape Dance Colours! In order to be awarded this you have to participate in the Cape Dance Medals Competition and achieve a distinction 6 YEARS in a row. They first received their half-colours in 2009 for three years distinctions and have now achieved full colours. Well done to both girls on this outstanding achievement!
Regards
