CBHS Newsletter 5 - Founders Day - May '11

FOUNDERS DAY: PROUDLY CAMPS BAY FOR 105 YEARS!

Today, Friday 13th 2011, is our Founders Day. From our small beginnings as a school in 1956, in this building until today, a lot has changed and a lot has stayed the same. The building that started without an enclosed entrance and a single story has seen some changes. The pool was added in the 1980’s as well as the seminar wing and tuckshop. There was a time when the car park in front was full of prefab classrooms with one below the clothing shop and 2 filling the matric quad. Since then these classrooms have been removed and the DAQ received a roof. There are always improvements happening at Camps bay High. I am sure if you ask any past pupil, they will be able to recall some large changes that took place during their time at this school.

In your time here we have seen Camps Bay move into the digital era with the old OHP’s in classes being replaced by interactive white-boards and data projectors, and TV screens. Increasingly lessons involve the use of some form of media, usually DVD clips from the internet. The roll-out of this new technology will continue with the connecting of all classes to the internet, and the continued roll-out of data projectors to classrooms. At the start of this year we installed new computers in the lab and upgraded the computers in the library.

Apart from these aids, Camps Bay has continued to promote its excellent academic programme through an expanded subject choice. We currently have the largest subject choice in the peninsula (out of all 500 + high schools). Last year we grew our offering further by introducing Dance as a subject. This means that now we offer all the Art subjects. Our performance has continued to improve. For 2 years now we have been able to see a 100% Matric pass rate.

It may seem strange to talk about the tuckshop on Founders Day, but we have changed the service provider in this area. Our tuckshop now is the best school tuckshop in the Western Cape. It has the greatest menu diversity, the most competitive prices and the best décor. It operates for the longest trading hours and the inclusion of games and a large flat screen TV had added to the ambience of the venue. The popularity of this place is an indication of its great success.

General upgrades to our facilities have been happening over the last two years. This started with a new state-of-the-art waterpolo pool last year and the major venue upgrades this year.

For more photos of our new pool click ‹‹here››.

The following venues have all be painted and improved in some way. The offices, from my office, the front office, Mr Mostert's, those of Ms Cronje & Mr Jennekes, Mr O’Reilly the Counsellor, Ms Denning, Ms Olivier, Mrs Cosslett, the sick room, the store room, the Counsellor waiting area and the kitchen. Currently the boys changing room is in the process of a major revamp; which will see a total change to this facility. As part of our capital expenses we also bought a third school bus, a new Quantum.

All these changes, both from years ago and more recently, all are focused on providing the best educational experience for each child. I would call these facilities and new equipment part of the enabling environment that allows us to offer each child a wonderful school experience.

We are proud of our present and former pupils. We have framed our art pupils work and it can now be seen on the walls of the lower corridors at the staffroom. We want to share their special talents with all who walk up and down this corridor. We are also proud of our past pupils, and have put up pictures and quotes from some of them to help inspire this generation of pupils to also go out into the world and make their mark.

We are delighted that Noli Meje was able to come and be part of our founders day assembly. Noli matriculated in 2005. At school she was a model pupil, taking part in school dramatic productions and singing at various functions. After matriculating she has pursued a career in the performing arts, appearing in various TV shows and is currently an entrant in the Idols competition. We would like her to be an example to all of our pupils to follow their dream.

So in conclusion, thank you to our founders and their vision for a High School in Camps Bay. I trust we have carried the Camps Bay flag, flying high with pride this year since the last founders day. I challenge each and every pupil to play their part in making this school great in the year ahead.

CAMPS BAY GOES GREEN
Taylor Jackson has set up a Green Team comprising pupils and parents. The Green Team will be launching a series of initiatives to set the school on a greener, more sustainable path and to instill in the pupils a passion for the planet and an ethic of conservation. The Green Team’s first initiative will be called CBHS GOES GREEN. The aim is to dramatically reduce the school’s weekly contribution to landfill sites (hopefully from 30 to 3 wheelie bins a week) by establishing a 3-bin system so that pupils have the option of sending their “waste” to either a compost heap, a recycling centre or a landfill site, depending on the nature of the “waste”. (Please support the Team’s efforts by packing your child’s lunch into reusable containers, rather than disposable packaging!) The Green Team will also be organizing a series of Green Guest Speakers at our regular Green Assemblies to speak on a wide range of environmental topics. And once they’re getting a steady supply of compost, a vegetable gardening society will surely spring up… we will keep you posted.

CULTURAL EVENING
Monday night, the 16th May, will see Camps Bay High School’s array of different talents on stage. The Dance, Drama and Music departments are delighted to invite you to our Cultural evening, which will no doubt be an exciting event. The evening starts at 19h00 and tickets will be available, at R10.00 at the door.
