CBHS Newsletter 4 - Oct '10

Dear Parents

Thank you for your support for the school in attending our Celebration prize and award evening on the 13th October. This was a wonderful celebration of the life of the school and the achievements of our pupils.

Matric Exam
We formally said goodbye to our Matric pupils at a special Valedictory Assembly on the 20th October. This was a sad moment that ended 5 years of schooling at Camps Bay High School. Before the assembly the matrics enjoyed tea and eats with their parents and the staff around the pool. After the assembly the school hosted a final lunch for the matrics and staff.

The exams have already started and the pupils appear to be happy with the papers. Today’s history exam was visited by 2 exam monitors from the Department of Education.

Prefects for 2011
The new prefects for 2011 were announced at celebration. We are very pleased with the group that were voted in. After their election they went on a planning weekend. At the end of this they elected a Head Prefect and two Deputies. It gives me great pleasure to introduce the new prefects to the parents. They are:

Budget Meeting
24 Nov 2010 @ 5:30PM
In the John Ince Hall
This is a notification to all Parents inviting you to attend a meeting where we approve the school budget for 2011. If you want to view the budget prior to this meeting, please mail dekorte@campsbayhigh.co.za. At this meeting we will set the school fees for 2011.

Drug Awareness
We currently have Jarydd and Donovan from the Drug Awareness Agency in the school. They have spoken in assembly and are addressing classes and grades. They are also seeing small groups of children. Both have had their own journey into substance abuse and narrowly escaped with their lives. They are able to advice pupils wisely not to choose drugs. Can you ask your child about this programme. It runs until the end of this week.

Life Talk
You will have received a letter inviting you to this evenings’ meeting on Thursday 28th October at 6:30 pm. Even if you have a great relationship with your child, you could attend this talk and be a support to parents who are struggling.

Farewell
In the last 2 weeks we have lost through death two friends of Camps Bay High School.

Max Marin passed away after a long illness. His wife Shirley has worked at Camps Bay High school for many years as our resident archivist. Over the last 9 years she has worked in a part-time capacity. A number of staff members were able to support her by attending the funeral on 22nd October.

Steven Watson, a past pupil and Head Prefect (1975) died suddenly earlier this week. Heather his wife and their 4 children (Garth, Brett, Wayne, Dylan) all went to Camps Bay High School. Steve served as our governing body chairman until 2006 when his youngest son Dylan matriculated. He has been a hard-working community member, serving all three school as a governor over a period of 16 years uninterrupted service. The funeral will be on Saturday 30th October at the Sea Point Congregational Church, on the corner of Main and Marais Road at 10:30am.

Final Exams
A reminder that the final exams for the year start on the 15th November, a mere 2 weeks away. The exam timetable has been given to your child.

SPORT
Swimming
Camps Bay took part in a Gala at home against 6 other schools. They swam very well and came 3rd overall. Congratulations to all the swimmers and thanks to everyone who helped with the time-keeping. We encourage everyone to come and support us next week at home.

Tennis
The 1st team girls beat Westerford 5 – 1 but sadly lost to Rustenberg 4 – 2. Well done

Cricket
CBHS U19 played St Josephs who batted first and scored 73 runs all out. Elvin Kanyerere took 3 wickets for 10 runs, Aaqib Simons took 2 wickets for 14 runs and Dylan Meek took 2 wickets for 15 runs. Camps Bay then batted and scored 73 runs for 3 wickets. Kyle Horn was 49 not out. CBHS won by 7 wickets – well done.

Text Books
After the final exams we expect each textbook that we issued to be returned. Can you talk to your child and confirm that they still have all their books. Lost books will need to be replaced as we need them for the 2011 class. There will be the usual opportunity to sell the books that you bought.

Yours sincerely
