CBHS Commencing Newsletter 1 - Jan '10

Dear Parents

Welcome back to the start of a new school year. We are excited about the school programme that stretches out for 2010. Your children have been allocated to most of their classes and work has begun. There are skills they need to master and content they need to understand and remember in all their subjects and learning areas. On this mighty task we have made a start. Pupils will be getting homework from today.

We have issued each child in the school with a Camps Bay Homework Diary. In this diary there is place for you to send a message to the school.

MATRIC RESULTS 2009
We had 97 Matrics who wrote the final exam. I was so proud of my pupils and staff when I found we had a 100% pass rate. I am including the top 15 Matrics results for your interest. Danica Davies, our top achiever, scored an average of 87,3%. She achieved over 90% for Maths and Life Sciences, and over 80% for the rest of her subjects. Out of our 97 pupils we attained 100 subject distinctions (A’s). A further great achievement was getting the four weakest pupils to pass. We had four pupils who failed in June, and through hard work on the part of their teachers they managed to pass. Well over 60% of the class qualified to go to University, with 28% of the pupils averaging a B and above. Well done to all on these great results.

NEW TEACHERS
We welcome six new teachers this year:
Mr Thomas Reisenberger
Ms Alexa Le Chat
Ms Kelly Brooker
Ms Brionne Ricketts
Ms Delitha Snyman
Ms Emma Wakelin

We are very fortunate to have the services of a wonderful group of teachers. There are 41 teachers. Our enrolment for 2010 is 650 pupils. This works out at a class size of 15 in theory. However, in reality we have class sizes averaging 25.

KEEPING THE SCHOOL DRIVEWAY OPEN FOR PUPILS
We will again be asking parents to respect our wish to keep the driveway open for half-an-hour before and half-an-hour after school. At this time our children are walking in this area, and it is unsafe if parents drive through. Please drop and meet your children at the 2 parking areas we have above and below the school. Thank you for your help in this regard. We expect the prefects to enforce this in the mornings at the motor gate.

THE FOCUS FOR 2010
We are focusing on three big ideas for this year:

1. Camps Bay really goes GREEN
We will be investigating ways of raising our environmental awareness. This will be more than just recycling. In all our subjects we will be creating material that focuses on these issues. We will also be planting a school vegetable garden.

2. Proudly Camps Bay
The Prefects and RCL will continue to grow the ideas around what it means to be ‘Proudly Camps Bay’. This will include War Cries and organizing supporters for our different sporting and cultural events.

3. Regular and Rigorous Work
We will continue to find ways of getting our pupils to work every day. This will involve setting homework tasks and monitoring work closely. We are also committed to teaching at a standard and level of difficulty that stretches our pupils academically.
