CBHS Newsletter 5 - Jun '09

Cape Town has been in the icy grip of winter, while our pupils have been in the process of writing their first formal exams of the year. Included with the report are some helpful hints from the Life Orientation Department on how to ‘debrief’ your child when discussing their report. I would strongly encourage you to take the time to do this.

It was a shock to everyone when the National Department of Education decided to unilaterally raise the passing requirements in Grade 8 and Grade 9. You may have followed the efforts of the Western Cape Education Department to have this postponed to next year. Sadly, the National Department cracked the whip and we had to implement with immediate effect.

The new pass requirements in Grades 8 and 9 are:
English above 50%
Mathematics above 40%
Two other learning areas above 50%
Two other learning areas above 40%

These new pass levels have dramatically increased our number of pupils who do not pass these exams. After having a good look at the Grade 8 and 9 results, most pupils failing, need to simply pass either Maths or English to ensure an overall pass. We will be working very hard to ensure this happens by the end of the next term.

Many pupils failing English in Grade 8 had not done all their class work and this had caused their marks to drop. We will again be sending out the term planner and test and assignment programme. Can you please help us help your children to get all their work in during the term.

FOUNDERS DAY ASSEMBLY (22 MAY)

We enjoyed a wonderful Founders Day Assembly.

The guest speaker was Bernard Schafer, a well-known community figure and past pupil of the school.

He shared some amusing anecdotes of his time at the school. After this, past pupils from all the Camps Bay Schools enjoyed a cup of tea with the staff in the Seminar Room.

SOIREÉ: Camps Bay Schools Concert

The Camps Bay Schools staff and senior pupils entertained all with their delightful Soireè. Under the overall management of William Cawood and Mia Martens the evening came together. A highlight of the evening that will be remembered for all time was the primary school’s ‘ABBA number’, that ended with Stuart Collier being carried aloft by his staff.

The finale was the three principals doing a song and dance number. The money raised over the two performances is used to pay for the design and layout of our school magazines at the end of the year.

2009 UCT MATHEMATICS COMPETITION PRIZE GIVING

On Wednesday 27th May Jerome Tangocci was awarded and Individual Award at the UCT Mathematics prizegiving. Well done, Jerome – who was the only Camps Bay High pupil to receive and award.
